A temporary visa for people outside Australia who are engaged to an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, and who intend to marry and then apply for a partner visa.

The Prospective Marriage visa lets you come to Australia to marry your fiance. It is a temporary visa, and once you marry you can apply for a partner visa to stay permanently. You must be outside Australia when you apply, and you and your partner must genuinely intend to marry within the visa's validity period.

Who can apply
To be granted this visa you generally need to meet all of the following. Every case is assessed on its own facts, so treat this as a guide rather than a checklist.
A genuine intention to marry
You and your fiance must genuinely intend to marry, and usually must have met in person as adults.
Sponsorship
Your fiance must sponsor you, subject to sponsorship limits.
Outside Australia
You must be outside Australia when you lodge and when the visa is decided.
Marry within the visa period
You must marry within the validity of the visa, then you can apply for a partner visa.
Health and character
You and any dependents must meet health and character requirements.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm your eligibility and your fiance's ability to sponsor you.
- Gather evidence of your relationship and intention to marry.
- Lodge the 300 application from outside Australia.
- Complete health and police checks as requested.
- Enter Australia and marry within the visa's validity.
- Apply for a partner visa to move toward permanent residence.
Costs and processing
A visa application charge applies, with separate costs for health examinations and police certificates. A further charge applies to the partner visa you lodge after marrying. When you have the visa
You can live, work and study in Australia while the visa is valid. You must marry your sponsor within the visa period and then apply for a partner visa to remain in Australia.
